Gilbert Lee Smith (age 73), born in Glendale, CA on January 16, 1939, passed away suddenly at Verdugo Hills Hospital, Glendale, CA on September 17, 2012. Gilbert was the son of Gilbert "Smitty" Smith, long-time director of the La Canada Youth House, and Leona Brooks Smith. As a young man, Gil was an active member of Mt.Olive Lutheran Church and La Canada United Methodist Church. He served his country in the Air Force for 4 years from 1961–1965 and was a dedicated electrical engineer at Southern California Edison (SCE) for over 30 years. In quasi-retirement, his passions were driving his "Tiger Bus" motorhome on road trips and perpetually tinkering with electronics and his automobiles. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend and he will be deeply missed. Gilbert is survived by his three children, Wayne Smith of Tempe, AZ, Laura Arocha of Dublin, OH, and Warren Smith of Vienna, VA, their mother, Barbara, and eight grandchildren. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. located at La Canada United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park.
